NST Information - Introduction of the "EU ETS" surcharges as of January 1, 2024

With effect from January 1, 2024, all shipping companies are obliged to buy emission certificates when calling at European ports - depending on the number of ports called at and in connection with the previous or subsequent length of the sea voyage. The certificate trading system has existed since 2005 in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping by 50% by 2030 and to become carbon-neutral by 2050 in the long term. As of January 2024, however, the pressure on shipping companies will increase considerably and the 2030 target is to be achieved in several steps:

50% of emissions for journeys to/from one or more European ports and 100% of emissions for journeys between European ports

This leads to the introduction of a new surcharge....
